When replacement of the entire unit or tube bundle is needed, make sure to use a replacement that is specifically designed for a vacuum condensing service. The goal of this article is to help navigate these potential pit falls and allow for better planning of these maintenance activities. Varying suction pressure requirements, load, motive conditions, and mechanical design specifications means that each system is uniquely designed for each site and each process. By designing a unique system for each process, the ejector system can be designed to meet the specific needs of that process in the most energy efficient manner. Because of this reality, spare parts for these systems are not stocked off the shelf items. Spares parts need to be manufactured when ordered, which results in longer lead times than what some might expect. These lead times can be problematic if the ejector system in question is not meeting its design performance or during short turnarounds that require a quick delivery of spares. In these cases, it may not be possible to procure the spare parts in time or those parts need to be expedited at an additional cost. Each ejector and condenser supplied by Graham has a spare parts sheet showing the recommended spares and their corresponding part number. Ejector Vacuum System Design Serial Number AndFor a copy of the recommended spare parts for a specific system, please contact Graham with a serial number and a copy of that systems spare part sheets will be provided. Often these vacuum systems operate for long periods of time between shut downs and helping to ensure good operation between outages requires that equipment have a good preventative maintenance plan. Knowing what activities are recommended and following through on those activities are an important part of ensuring good performance. Here are some activities that should be performed on a regular basis to ensure good operation. This allows issues to be corrected before they cause serious performance problems and allows one to identify parts that are likely to need replaced during the next shutdown. For these ejectors, the diffuser wall thickness should be measured via a UT thickness instrument. This can be used to detect thinning diffuser walls prior to failure during operation. Other ejectors are made from castings and must be internally inspected. The internal throat diameter should be measured and compared to design. Also, the internals should be checked for evidence of steam erosion, pitting, and corrosion. Ejector Vacuum System Design Full Capability AndThis is done to ensure the condensers continue to operate to their full capability and to help prevent them from operating at higher pressures, which could cause vacuum problems. It also allows for the overall condition of the bundle to be monitored over time so one can properly plan for re-tubing or replacement.
